Is the purpose of life to achieve happiness? Who does not long to arrive some distant day at that sunlit meadow where we may abide in pure contentment? In reality we know life is not like that; our road is often dreary, the way unclear. Much of the time we are lost in the dismal states of guilt, grief, betrayal, doubt, depression, anger, terror and the like. Is this all we can hope for?

Jung's map of the psyche: Encountering the shadow

The Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist C.G. Jung described himself as a pioneer and explorer of the uncharted mystery that is the human soul. In this presentation, we begin by exploring key elements of Jung’s Map of the Psyche. We traverse his charting of psyche’s vast and winding pathways, from his unique thought on complexes to his discovery of the collective unconscious and archetypes.

Our primary focus will fall on the Shadow, one of Jung’s most foundational psychological concepts, both at the personal as well as the deeper collective level. He held that to encounter and accept our shadow, “the thing we have no wish to be” (CW 16, §470), is fundamental to the process of individuation, to becoming whole.

If the shadow, personal or collective, is not recognized and accepted, it acts out behind our back, so to speak; that despised quality that we reject as our own is unconsciously, and often destructively, projected onto the other. But if we risk the encounter we may find that the shadow is not just negative, but holds hidden sparks of creative potential that may energize new growth and provide avenues to more meaningful human relationships. Paradoxically, it is the shadow that brings the light. As Marie Louise von Franz so well put it, encountering the shadow carries, “a chance to bring light into the darkness of our modern world.”

    the animus

    What is the Animus?

Both the Feminine and the Masculine are present in all of us. In a woman the Inner Masculine energy is called the Animus. How does it come into being? How does it manifest in our lives, both positively and negatively? How can we dialogue with the Animus? These are the essential questions that the lecture will address.

We will spend some time exploring the theme of the killer Animus in the Fairy Tale Bluebeard and we will look at a possible transformation of the Animus: from enemy to friend, from obstacle to “torch bearer”. Excerpts from movies will be presented as well as some Tango performances in which Anima and Animus dance together.

    About the Speaker:

Elisabeth first realized her love for psychology and psychotherapy when she started working with artists. Starting her career as a singer and later a voice teacher, she came in contact with artists who experienced debilitating stage fright and at times were blocked in their creativity. She started developing Performance Without Fear, a course in which she used her background in Yoga, Qigong, Meditation and Psychotherapy to help artists release tension both physically and psychologically.

At the same time, she discovered the works and psychology of Carl Jung and began her training in Analytical Psychology at the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts. She graduated in 2009.  Elisabeth has a private practice in Toronto. She assists both adults and teenagers struggling with challenges such as anxiety, depression, loss and grief, difficult relationships, loss of meaning and life transitions. She also provides supervision.

Elisabeth’s focus is to assist someone in their unique Individuation Process. She believes that there is a potential for wholeness in each human being, an urge towards freedom, completeness and self-realization similar to that of a blade of grass, which manages to find its way to the sunlight even through rock and rubble. That is what gives life hope and meaning.

Elisabeth is a member of the International Association of Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts (OAJA). She is also a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and of the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT).

Elisabeth is also an aficionada of Argentine Tango and travels the world to study that beautiful art form.

    Individuation

Jung said "The concept of individuation plays a large role in our psychology. In general, it is the process by which individual beings are formed and differentiated; in particular, it is the development of the psychological individual as a being distinct from the general, collective psychology." CW 6 para. 757.

For Jung, individuation is an innate foundational dynamic of the psyche, yet his dry definition fails to capture the magnitude and drama of this drive in our lives. In my talk to the Calgary Jung Society, I would like to elaborate on the process of individuation throughout life as a force for individual development but also for the world.
