Friday, Nov. 17th Seminar for the Jung Society of Calgary:

Monumental Complexes - Niki de St. Phalle
From Archetypal Possession to Human Suffering and Transformation

The Mother Complex:

French-American artist Niki de St. Phalle’s relationship with her mother was deeply complicated – for her – even before she was born! It was while she was pregnant with Niki, her mother found out about her husband’s infidelities. Niki said: “She cried all through her pregnancy. I felt those tears. Once Mother told me it was all my fault.”

This seminar explores Niki’s mother complex and the evolution of her attitude towards the feminine through representations of the feminine and mothers in her art, culminating in the Empress and other female Major Arcana figures in her extraordinary sculpture garden, The Tarot Garden, in Tuscan Italy.

Saturday, Nov. 18th Seminar for the Jung Society of Calgary:

Monumental Complexes - Niki de St. Phalle
From Archetypal Possession to Human Suffering and Transformation

The Father Complex:

The de St. Phalle’s were the 13th oldest family in France, landed aristocracy with great wealth and power. Niki was raised on tales of the heroic history of her male ancestors, as Knights and Crusaders in the courts of Kings and on dramatic battlefields, and similarly, she worshipped her father as a hero throughout her early childhood.

This seminar will explore the impact of the Father Archetype and the personal Father on Niki’s life, her art, and her relationship to the masculine over time, again culminating in the representations of the masculine Major Arcana in the Tarot Garden, in particular, The Emperor.
