Calgary Anthroposophical Society

LECTURE: Hidden Pictures in Tolkien's Work - Friday March 28, 7:00 pm

How is it that The Lord of the Rings works so powerfully within us? Mark McGivern will present some less well-known influences on Tolkien’s early life when he worked with archetypes and hidden pictures. One of these influences, Owen Barfield, a fellow member of The Inklings who helped shape Tolkien’s understanding of the evolution of language, was an anthroposophist. An “anthroposophical lens” appears to be key to unlocking the story’s hidden meanings.

WORKSHOP: The Response to Evil - Saturday March 29, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm

We will look at the story through biographical journalling, shared listening, discussion, and artistic experiences. The call to know oneself will be explored by examining how characters in the story respond to the temptations of evil, power, and corruption.
