Introduction to Jung’s Core Concepts
Seminar facilitated by Jungian analyst Peggy Voth

This event will be rescheduled to allow more registrants to join. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Do you ever go to a lecture at the Calgary Jung Society and wonder what on earth the presenter is talking about when they refer to an “archetype” or to the “Self” (with a big S)? Do you question how complex a “complex” can be? Or puzzle over “the shadow” – where is it, and of what? If the “unconscious” is unconscious, how can we talk about it? Some of these words have crept into our everyday language. Perhaps we assume we know what they refer to, but do we? What did Jung mean by these concepts? Come to this seminar and find out!

A 5-week seminar offered by the Society is intended to help you get your head around some of the basic ideas that underlie Jungian psychology. These concepts provide an approach to understanding ourselves. In this seminar we will not only explore how Jung developed these ideas but also look at how these concepts can be useful when applied to our everyday experience. What does it look like when our “shadow” is activated? How do we know when we are in a “complex”? This seminar is an introduction; no previous reading or study is required to register. Readings may be assigned during the course of the seminar.

October 18 Archetypes and Complexes
October 25 Ego and the Self
November 1 Persona and Shadow
November 8 Anima and Animus
November 15 Individuation

About the Presenter:

"Human beings interest me so, when I entered university at mid-life, I studied social work. After working in that field for two decades, I added depth psychology to my education and practice. I graduated from the University of Calgary with my bachelors and masters degrees in social work, and from the C. G. Jung Foundation in Toronto with my certification in analytical psychology.

My masters thesis broke ground with its interview-style research into the second-generation effects of incest. It has been published as an article in the “Journal of Childhood Sexual Abuse,” referenced in subsequent dissertations, and presented to audiences working in the psychiatry profession. For my Jungian thesis, I wrote “Earthrise: Symbol, Culture and the Individual.” Humans create civilization and are also shaped by it. My thesis explored the interplay between society and its people, with an emphasis on the personal symbol as a motivator for making an individual contribution to society. My 2021 book titled The Nature of Woman: When the Feminine Is Ready the Masculine Responds invites women to accept and live their feminine nature.

I am a clinical social worker and a Jungian analyst. The two disciplines complement each other, enabling me to work with dreams and other messages from the unconscious while also grounding this material in the context of everyday life."
